How are openings (windows/doors) recognized?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

vyzn recognizes openings directly from your IFC model. Windows and doors are identified by their IFC type (IfcWindow and IfcDoor respectively), automatically grouped according to SIA 2032, and pre-assigned a default component from the catalog, which you can adjust at any time.

Why It Matters

When windows and doors are recognized correctly, vyzn automatically assigns them to the right groups according to SIA 2032 and pre-assigns a sensible default component – saving you the manual assignment. In addition, the opening area is tracked as a dedicated property per component, so window and door openings can be taken into account in the areas.

How It Works in vyzn

After the upload, vyzn processes your IFC file automatically in the background and reads the components including their properties (property sets). The following applies:

  • Recognition via the IFC type: IfcWindow (also WindowStandardCase) is recognized as a window, IfcDoor (also DoorStandardCase) as a door.
  • Automatic grouping according to SIA 2032: The elements are assigned to the groups "Fenster" (windows) and "Türen" (doors). This automatic grouping only runs if no groups have been set yet – assignments you have already made are not overwritten.
  • Defaults from the catalog: Recognized elements are pre-assigned a sensible default component, e.g. "Fenster (3-fach)" for windows and "Aussentüre (Aluminium)" for doors. You can adjust these defaults at any time.
  • Opening area as a property: Each component carries the property "Fläche der Öffnungen" (area of openings) – the total area of all openings in an element.

Important: recognition depends on clean IFC classification. If windows or doors are not classified as IfcWindow/IfcDoor in the model (for example as generic proxies such as IfcBuildingElementProxy), the automatic assignment does not take effect.

Practical Example

You upload an IFC model in which the windows are classified as IfcWindow: vyzn recognizes them automatically, assigns them to the "Fenster" group, and pre-assigns the default component "Fenster (3-fach)". If, on the other hand, the windows were exported as generic proxies (IfcBuildingElementProxy), the automatic assignment does not take effect – you then group them afterwards in the grouping dialog, for example based on the IFC properties or property sets such as Pset_WindowCommon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if windows or doors are not classified as IfcWindow/IfcDoor?

In that case, the automatic assignment does not take effect. However, such cases can be cleanly grouped afterwards in the grouping dialog – there you can also group based on the IFC properties or property sets (e.g. Pset_WindowCommon).

Does vyzn overwrite my existing groupings?

No. The automatic grouping only runs if no groups have been set yet – assignments you have already made are not overwritten.

How are the opening areas captured?

For each component, the opening area is tracked as a dedicated property, "Fläche der Öffnungen" (area of openings) – the total area of all openings in an element. This way, window and door openings can be taken into account in the areas.
