Do I need to link all elements to components?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

No, you do not need to link every element to a component. Deliberately link only the elements that should be included in your analyses – for example, a life cycle assessment according to KBOB 2022. Elements without a component are simply skipped in the calculation.

Why It Matters

Your result is only ever as complete as your assignment. If you do not link a relevant component at all, it will be missing from the result without you necessarily being alerted to it. At the same time, an assigned component that cannot be resolved in the selected catalog can block the life cycle assessment. A deliberate assignment is therefore the foundation of a reliable evaluation.

How It Works in vyzn

An element is only included in the evaluation if it is linked to a component that can be resolved in the selected catalog. vyzn distinguishes between two cases:

  • Elements without a component: vyzn deliberately leaves these out. There is no error; the result is simply calculated without them. This allows you to intentionally leave auxiliary or non-relevant elements unlinked.
  • Elements with a component that is not (or no longer) available in the selected catalog: vyzn handles this more strictly. During the life cycle assessment, the system reports this as an error ("Zugewiesene Bauteile fehlen im Katalog" – assigned components are missing from the catalog), and the calculation cannot be run again until you have corrected or removed the affected assignment.

To help you keep track, vyzn shows you the assignment status – for example as the task "Alle Gruppen den Bauteilen aus dem Katalog zuordnen" (assign all groups to components from the catalog), which only counts as completed once no unassigned elements remain.

Practical Example

Suppose you want to run a life cycle assessment according to KBOB 2022: link all components that are relevant to the statement you want to make, and deliberately leave auxiliary or non-relevant elements unlinked. Make sure that the assigned components actually exist in the selected catalog – otherwise the calculation is blocked until the assignment has been cleaned up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do unlinked elements block my calculation?

No. Elements without any component are simply skipped in the calculation – they contribute nothing to the result, but they do not block the evaluation either.

What happens if an assigned component is not in the catalog?

During the life cycle assessment, vyzn reports the error "Zugewiesene Bauteile fehlen im Katalog" (assigned components are missing from the catalog). The calculation cannot be run again until you have corrected or removed the affected assignment.

Will I be warned if a relevant element is not linked?

Not necessarily – the result is simply calculated without the element. Therefore, keep an eye on the assignment status, for example via the task "Alle Gruppen den Bauteilen aus dem Katalog zuordnen".
