Can I automatically link model elements to building components?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

Yes, vyzn takes care of this for you – automatically and based on the standard. During IFC import, your model elements are grouped according to SIA 2032 A.2.2, and each group is directly assigned a suitable standard component from the vyzn catalogue. The assignments are deliberately intended as a starting point: review and refine them afterwards in the mapping table.

Why It Matters

This means that right after the import you already have a largely linked model on which life cycle assessment, U-values and costs can be calculated. Instead of linking every element by hand, you start from a standards-based baseline and refine it specifically for your project.

How It Works in vyzn

When you import your IFC model, vyzn groups the model elements according to SIA 2032 A.2.2 – based on three criteria:

  • Element type: wall, slab, roof, window, door, column or beam
  • Membership in the insulation perimeter
  • Position: for example, against the ground

Each group is directly assigned a suitable standard component from the vyzn catalogue. Elements whose type cannot be clearly identified remain without a group and are shown as “Not assigned” in the preview.

Important and honest: today, the automatic component assignment assumes a massive construction method (concrete) as its standard set. Lighter construction methods such as timber are not yet available for this preset – the construction method selection in the import assistant currently also falls back to the same massive set.

You should then review the assignments in the mapping table and refine them for your project. There you can re-run the SIA 2032 grouping at any time at the click of a button (including standard components), or assign components to each group manually from the catalogue.

Practical Example

Exterior walls above ground, for example, receive the standard component “Betonfassade WDVS (250 mm concrete, mineral wool)”, while the roof receives the component “Flachdach (240 mm concrete, PUR/PIR)”. This lets you continue working with life cycle assessment, U-values and costs right after the import, and then tailor the components to your project step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to elements that are not recognised?

They remain without a group and are shown as “Not assigned” in the preview. Review the assignments afterwards in the mapping table and assign components manually from the catalogue where needed.

Can I re-run the automatic grouping later?

Yes. In the mapping table you can re-run the SIA 2032 grouping at any time at the click of a button – including standard components.

Is the standard set also available for timber or other lighter construction methods?

Not yet. The standard set currently assumes a massive construction method (concrete); the construction method selection in the import assistant also falls back to the same massive set for now.

Can I tailor the standard set to my projects?

Yes – we are happy to look together with you at how to tailor the standard set optimally to your projects.

Update (version 1.8.5)

As of version 1.8.5, you can also use the «Vorprojektstart» function during import, which automatically creates a first variant with the assigned components so you reach initial results faster. This Express mode is only available when a Digital Model Plan (DMP) exists for the model.
