How do I link materials to KBOB reference materials?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

In vyzn, you link your own material to a reference material via an attribute group. The KBOB 2022 life cycle assessment data is available as dedicated reference materials in the catalogue (building materials and building technology taken directly from the official KBOB dataset). Once linked, vyzn adopts the values automatically and keeps them in sync.

When to Use This

Whenever one of your own materials should take its LCA values from the official KBOB dataset instead of you typing them in manually. The link is intended for materials — components inherit their LCA data through their layers and materials, not through a direct KBOB link.

Prerequisites

  • Your material exists in the catalogue.
  • You are in edit mode — the link can only be set while editing.
  • A matching KBOB reference material exists in the catalogue. For purely manufacturer-specific products without a KBOB equivalent there may be none — in that case, enter the values manually.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open your material in the catalogue and switch to edit mode.
  2. On the relevant attribute group (e.g. the LCA group), click "Link to a reference material".
  3. In the "Link attribute group to reference material" dialog, search for the matching KBOB reference material.
  4. Confirm with "Link".

Expected Result

vyzn automatically transfers the reference material's values (UBP, embodied energy, greenhouse gas emissions, biogenic carbon, etc.) into the linked attribute group of your material and locks these fields so they stay in sync — no manual copying required. If you want to remove the link, use "Delete link"; you can choose whether to keep the most recently transferred values ("Delete, but keep current values").

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to set the link outside edit mode — it can only be set while editing.
  • Trying to link components directly to KBOB — components inherit their LCA data through their layers and materials.
  • Expecting automatic updates after removing the link — without the link, the values are no longer updated automatically.
