How do I create multiple variants that I can compare?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

In vyzn, variants are technically versions of a model: you create them via the «+» icon, choosing between «Variante erstellen» (create variant, e.g. from a new IFC model) and «Variante duplizieren» (duplicate an existing variant), then adapt them. To compare them, you create a performance report in the building, select two to five variants and start the calculation. The finished report compares the variants across the key metrics – including a rating and a ranking.

When to Use This

Comparing variants is one of the core ideas of vyzn. Whenever you want to compare several states of your project – for example with different building elements, materials from the catalogue or configurations – you build variants for this purpose and compare them in a performance report.

Prerequisites

  • An IFC model that you can upload, or an existing variant that you can copy.
  • For the variant comparison in the performance report, you need at least two and at most five variants.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Part 1: Create variants

  1. Click the «+» icon and choose between «Variante erstellen» (create variant, e.g. by uploading a new IFC model) and «Variante duplizieren» (duplicate an existing variant as a copy). In vyzn, your variants are technically versions of a model.
  2. Adapt the new variant, for example with different building elements, materials from the catalogue or configurations.
  3. Repeat these steps until you have built up all the variants you want to compare.

Part 2: Compare variants

  1. In the building, open the menu item "Performance-Berichte" (performance reports).
  2. Click "Bericht erstellen" (create report), give the report a name and choose a phase (Wettbewerb/competition, Exploration, or Vertiefung/detailed design).
  3. Select the variants you want to compare – currently between two and a maximum of five.
  4. Start the calculation.

Expected Result

The finished report opens as a variant comparison. It compares the variants across the key metrics, including:

  • Life cycle assessment/emissions (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, embodied energy)
  • Energy (heating demand, SIA 380/1)
  • Costs
  • Area and comfort metrics

The report does not just place the variants side by side – it also puts them into context: per section and overall with a rating and a ranking, with the best variant highlighted. You can download the report as a PDF, share it and recalculate it when your data changes.
