Can I import zones and rooms from IFC (IfcSpace/IfcZone)?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

Yes – vyzn imports rooms from IFC (IfcSpace) directly during import, including name, storey, gross floor area and volume. IfcZone groupings are currently not imported as separate objects: on the zone side, vyzn works with its own concepts, in particular EBF zones (energy reference area zones), which you create yourself and assign your rooms to.

Why It Matters

If your rooms are already maintained as IfcSpace elements in the model, you do not need to create them manually in vyzn. In addition, vyzn can calculate an approximation of the energy reference area (EBF) directly from the IFC based on the rooms marked as heated, instead of you having to enter this value manually.

How It Works in vyzn

  • When your model is imported, vyzn recognises the IfcSpace elements and creates them as standalone rooms – including name, storey, gross floor area and volume.
  • You can see these rooms in the 3D viewer via "Show/hide IFC rooms".
  • You can then classify the rooms on the Rooms page and assign them via the spatial structure.
  • You create zones directly in vyzn: you set up EBF zones and assign your rooms to them. The pure IFC zone grouping (IfcZone) is currently not imported as a separate object.

Practical Example

If needed, vyzn calculates an approximation of the energy reference area (EBF) directly from the IFC based on the rooms marked as heated. The estimated EBF is shown transparently in m². You can, however, still set the EBF value yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IfcZone imported?

No – the pure IFC zone grouping used to combine several rooms is currently not imported as a separate object. On the zone side, vyzn works with its own EBF zones.

How reliable are the imported rooms?

That depends on the data quality of your model: clean IfcSpaces with well-maintained areas and volumes deliver the best results.

How can I find out how well my rooms come through automatically?

The best approach is to look at one of your IFC files together with us – then we can tell you specifically how well your rooms and areas come through automatically.

Update (version 1.8.5)

Whether a room created this way is heated is then set in zone management via the «Heated» checkbox (in the «General» tab, available again as of version 1.8.5) – this matters, among other things, for the EBF calculation.
