How is biogenic carbon calculated?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

vyzn reports biogenic carbon as its own indicator – transparently and separately from greenhouse gas emissions. This keeps the amount of carbon stored in the building clearly visible and makes projects and variants comparable.

Why It Matters

Because biogenic carbon is reported separately from greenhouse gas emissions, you can always see transparently how much carbon is stored in the building. The value appears as a dedicated "carbon storage" (C-Speicher) indicator – among other places in the REIDA and Minergie Net Zero exports.

How It Works in vyzn

  • The calculation is based on the KBOB 2022 values per material (in kg C per m² and year).
  • For each building element, vyzn converts the value to the effective quantity in your model and then sums across building elements, building services and other resources.
  • The total is additionally related to the energy reference area (kg C/(m²·a)), so that projects and variants become comparable.
  • The value is reported as a dedicated "carbon storage" (C-Speicher) indicator – among other places in the REIDA and Minergie Net Zero exports.

Practical Example

This lets you see at a glance how strongly timber elements, for example, act as carbon storage.
