Why are elements not being imported?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

In most cases the issue lies with the IFC model, not with vyzn. The most common causes are unsupported element types, an incorrect IFC class without a valid GlobalId, or failed model processing.

Issue Description

After importing an IFC model, some elements are missing in vyzn or are not taken over as building elements.

Signs of This Issue

  • Expected building elements do not appear in vyzn after the import.
  • Model processing aborts and the model shows the status "failed".

Root Cause

  • Unsupported element type: vyzn specifically reads structural and space-defining building elements – walls (including curtain walls), slabs/floors, roofs, windows, doors, columns, beams, foundations, rooms and others. Furniture and many HVAC/MEP objects are deliberately not imported as building elements.
  • Incorrect IFC class: If an element was exported from the authoring tool as a generic proxy, for example, or as pure geometry without a proper IFC class and without a valid GlobalId, it is skipped.
  • Processing failed: With corrupt, very large, or geometrically faulty files, model processing can abort.

Step-by-Step Solution

  1. Check whether the missing element is one of the supported element types (structural and space-defining building elements). Furniture and many HVAC/MEP objects are deliberately not imported.
  2. When exporting from your authoring tool, make sure the classification is correct (IFC2x3/IFC4) and the GUIDs are unique.
  3. If processing aborted with the status "failed", upload the file again – cleaned up if necessary.
  4. You can manually assign imported but not automatically assigned elements to a SIA 2032 group and a building element in the grouping dialog.

Common Mistakes

  • Elements are exported as generic proxies or as pure geometry without a proper IFC class and without a valid GlobalId – such elements are skipped.
  • Expecting furniture or HVAC/MEP objects to be imported as building elements – these are deliberately not taken over.
