Why can't I calculate a life cycle assessment (LCA) in vyzn?

Last updated July 2, 2026

Short Answer

In vyzn, the life cycle assessment (LCA) runs directly in the variant via "Calculate now" or "Recalculate". Before starting, the system checks the prerequisites. If the calculation does not start, it is almost always due to a missing or invalid energy reference area (EBF), missing LCA data, a faulty component build-up in the catalogue, or an assigned component that no longer exists.

Issue Description

You want to calculate the life cycle assessment in a variant, but the calculation via "Calculate now" or "Recalculate" does not start. Before every calculation, vyzn automatically checks whether the prerequisites are met – if they are not, the calculation does not start.

Root Cause

If the LCA calculation does not start, it is almost always one of these points:

  • Energy reference area (EBF) is missing or invalid: No zone with an EBF classification has been defined.
  • No LCA data assigned: There are no components with KBOB 2022 data (model elements, building technology, other resources).
  • Faulty component build-up in the catalogue: A matrix cell is empty (no material) or layer attributes such as thickness or service life are missing.
  • An assigned component no longer exists in the catalogue.

Step-by-Step Solution

  1. Define the EBF: Create a zone with an EBF classification in the zone management.
  2. Assign LCA data: Make sure components with KBOB 2022 data are assigned (model elements, building technology, other resources).
  3. Fix the component build-up: Check the catalogue for empty matrix cells without a material and add missing layer attributes (thickness, service life).
  4. Clean up assignments: In the configuration, remove assignments to components that no longer exist in the catalogue.
  5. Restart the calculation: Start the LCA again via "Calculate now" or "Recalculate".

Update (version 1.8.5)

As of version 1.8.5, LCA validation also gives more precise hints when one of these prerequisites is missing, and component issues are only shown when the component is actually assigned in the life cycle assessment.
