3rd Swiss Symposium on Embodied Emissions – from relevance to implementation

The 3rd Swiss Symposium on Embodied Emissions in the Construction Sector impressively demonstrated how broadly the topic is now supported: representatives from the real estate and construction industry, specialist authorities, label organizations, politics and research in one place.

For the first time, the symposium took place in a combined format for building construction and civil engineering. Two disciplines with different data levels, standards and decision logics – and, precisely for that reason, with great potential to learn from one another.

As an event partner, we had the opportunity to hold many conversations and gain direct insights into where the market is heading. It became particularly clear that demand for data-based evaluation and optimization is growing most strongly where methodological clarity meets operational reality.

Scope 3 in the real estate context: methodology as a common language

The white paper shows how emissions from the construction and life cycle of buildings are assigned to the relevant Scope 3 categories and how existing standards – in particular SIA 2032 – can be used for this. This creates a practical basis that addresses both the project and portfolio level.

Central to this is the clear categorization of the three calculation approaches:

  • Component-based life cycle assessment in accordance with SIA 2032
  • Benchmark-based extrapolations for standardized applications
  • Spend-based approaches where data depth is limited
